Hand-Carved Wooden Raven Kutkh and Peliken (Billiken) Sculptures by Kamchatka Folk Craftsman
Handcrafted wooden souvenirs from the Russian Peninsula of Kamchatka are unique because they combine the traditions of Russian and the Northern indigenous peoples of this land. Ancient legends about Kutkh, Peliken and Anunu are the reason why the local artisans often depicted them in their wooden sculptures.
Kutkh is the embodiment of the spirit of the Raven traditional for the various indigenous peoples in the Far East of Russia,  especially the Kamchatka and Chukotka Peninsulas. Kutkh appears in many legends as a key figure in the creation of the world (Creator of Earth), the progenitor of mankind in the image of a powerful shaman or trickster. Kutkh is a popular hero in the legends of the indigenous people of Chukotka and plays a central role in the mythology of original inhabitants of Kamchatka, the Koryaks and Itelmen. Many stories about Kutkh are similar to stories relating to Raven, which are common among the indigenous peoples of the Northwest coast of North America. This is probably due to the long history of cultural contacts between the peoples of Asia and North America.
Peliken (Billiken) is a traditional Eskimo and Chukchi talisman. There is a Chukchi legend about the man digging a pit for the meat storage. He found a Peliken figurine under the ground and since then he always had good luck. Peliken origin has long remained unknown. According to historical researches, the authorship of the original image belongs to an American art teacher Florence Pretz from Kansas City, Missouri. In the early twentieth century she made a trip to Japan and, upon return, made a wooden figurine, resembling her favorite image of the Japanese god of fortune Hotei. Later the figurine became the symbol of The Billiken Company of Chicago. The character was named Billy Ken (Billiken) and soon became widely spread in all States of America.
After some time the figurine came to the Russian Chukotka from the American Alaska. The foreign name was adapted to the Chukchi language, in which there is no sonant "b", thus Billiken turned into Peliken. Currently, there are different schools of Peliken's image depiction and each figurine takes on its own features from a particular craftsman.
