This hand colored glass slide is an ORIGINAL and it is NOT a reproduction. It was created to be projected onto the movie theatre screen before the film was released to promote the "coming attraction". Some people in the movie collectible world have said, that, glass slides are much rarer than the paper poster memorabilia from the same film and are very rare pieces of film history.

Plot Summary:
Yale graduate Dan Brooks (Bing Crosby) is expected to marry wealthy boss J.L. Higgins' (Charles Bickford) daughter Margaret (Frances Gifford) and join the family box-making business. He is far more interested in racing a horse he owns, Broadway Bill.
Doing poorly at work, Dan and his groom Whitey (Clarence Muse) leave town to enter Bill in the Imperial Derby, but first must find money for the entry fee. He and old pal Professor Pettigrew (Raymond Walburn) each try to con the other out of a few bucks, then end up singing the Yale school song to get out of a restaurant tab they cannot pay.
Maggie's younger sister Alice (Coleen Gray) is secretly in love with Dan, so she offers him some money, pawning her belongings. Whitey is beaten up trying to win some in a craps game, and Broadway Bill is carted away because Dan does not pay his feed bill. Dan is jailed, too.
A rich man makes a bet on 100-to-1 shot Bill, leading to false rumors that the horse is a shoo-in. The odds drop fast, but gamblers and a crooked jockey try to make sure their own favorites win the race. Broadway Bill somehow manages to win, but collapses at the finish line and suffers a fatal heart attack.
A saddened Dan takes comfort in deciding to buy and race Broadway Bill II. His enthusiasm persuades Alice and even her dad to lend Dan a hand.
Trivia
:
One of three movies that Oliver Hardy acted in without his partner Stan Laurel during the 25 year period that they made comedies together. The other two are Zenobia (1939) and The Fighting Kentuckian (1949).
Oliver Hardy is part of the crowd on the right side of this Glass Slide.
Oliver Hardy could have played himself in this movie, as he was a regular at the Santa Anita Racetrack. For a short time, he owned a stable of horses.
Previously filmed as Broadway Bill (1934), also directed by Frank Capra, and starring Warner Baxter and Myrna Loy. The climactic horse race is footage from the earlier version. 'Raymond Walburn' (Pettigrew) and 'Clarence Muse' (Whitey) repeat their roles as well. In addition, other actors repeated roles with slightly different character names: Ward Bond, Margaret Hamilton, Irving Bacon, Frankie Darro, Charles Lane, Pat Moriarty, Paul Harvey and Douglass Dumbrille.

Bing Crosby was born Harry Lillis Crosby in Tacoma, Washington in 1903, in a large working class family. He got the nickname "Bing" when he was 10. He went to college, intending to become a lawyer, but he joined a local band as a drummer, and he quit school in his last year. In 1926, he was spotted by
Paul Whiteman
, and was hired, along with his partner, Al Rinker. Whiteman added Harry Barris, and named them the Rhythm Boys, and they were a big hit. Crosby was the star of the act, and in 1931 he split from the group, and went solo. He was the number one recording star of the 1930s, and his distinctive style of singing was dubbed "crooning". He had done some singing in movies with the Rhythm Boys at the start of the 1930s, but he soon starting playing dramatic roles in musicals, and was a natural, likable performer, and was very successful in movies in the 1930s. In 1940 he teamed with Dorothy Lamour and Bob Hope for the first of the very successful "Road" movies,

, the musical re-make of The Philadelphia Story. Bing Crosby was among the very best selling singers of all time, and also was among the absolute biggest box office draws at the movies! There is no other singer who had as much success as he did in the movies, or vice versa! He passed away in 1977 at the age of 74.

Ward Bond was born in Benkelman, Nebraska in 1903. His family moved to Denver when he was a teen, and he went to college at USC. There this big burly man became a football player, and he became best friends with fellow teammate
John Wayne
(the two would go to bars, get drunk, and get into fights!). When Wayne started playing bit parts in movies in 1929, so did Bond. Wayne got his big break in The Big Trail in 1930, but Bond continued mostly playing bit parts for years before getting more significant roles. In 1929,
John Ford
spotted Bond, and gave him a speaking role in Salute in 1929, and he kept casting him in many of his movies, a total of 26 in all, perhaps the most any one actor made with a single director. Bond appeared in around
270 movies
over a 30 year period, one of the most of any actor. At his peak, he made 10 to 20 films every year, and he was in 30 movies in 1935 alone! He took any part that was offered him, continuing to take tiny bit parts after he had played some major roles.

He was extremely right wing politically, as were Wayne and Ford, and he actively campaigned against Communists in movies in the 1950s, earning him the hatred of liberals. In 1957, he finally achieved stardom, but it was as the lead in the TV show
Wagon Train
, which ran for four years. While he was still starring on the show, Bond had a massive heart attack and passed away in 1960, at 57. John Wayne gave the eulogy at his funeral.
